On behalf of Ngā Pae o te Maramatanga, Te Kupenga o MAI and Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, we extend this invitation to all Māori and Indigenous Doctoral Candidates to attend the 2011 MAI Doctoral Conference, hosted by Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, Whakatāne. The conference will be held at the Liberty Centre, 65 Wairaka Road, Whakatane on the 4th - 6th November, 2011.

Conference Theme and Title:

"Transformation: The politics of advancing knowledge"

The conference theme seeks to explore the challenges and activities associated with advancing knowledge, particularly as it relates to contexts where there is an existing archive and body of knowledge. How do we utilize what we 'discover' in our doctoral research to make changes that will benefit our communities, hapu, iwi and/or organizations? What are the new types of knowledge's that are being developed for the advancement of Māori? What will your PhD do for Māori?


Registrations:

Enrolment in a MAI PhD programme is required for registration. Registrations for the MAI PhD Doctoral Conference are now open. Presentation abstracts should be submitted to your MAI co-ordinator, this should be done by the 22nd of September.

For the first time we are expecting a small number of International Indigenous PhD Students.


Programme Workshops:

The programme is currently being organized as registrations and abstracts are finalized and will be provided shortly. On Saturday 5th, three workshops will be run congruently which focus on three specific themes:

  1. Beginning the PhD journey
  2. Ethics and Supervision
  3. Nearly at the top of the hill
These workshops will run for an hour including Q & A. MAI Co-ordinators will be kept informed of any changes /additions to the conference programme. We are also expecting a small number of International Indigenous PhD Students.


Presentations:

Each presenter has been allocated a 20 minute slot to include Q & A. These times will be strictly adhered to. MAI Co-ordinators will work with the presenter to determine how to best utilise the time allocation.


Abstracts:

All conference abstracts should be no longer than 200 words and reference the conference theme.

To submit title and abstract send to your nearest MAI site Co-ordinator Each MAI site co-ordinator will then forward accepted abstracts on to the maikiwhakatane@wananga.ac.nz Awanuiarangi Administrator to slot into the discipline streams. Streams will run for approximately 1 to 1.5 hours per session on day two of the conference. MAI Co-ordinators will be provided with the finalised programme 2 weeks prior to the doctoral conference where you will then be advised of your time slot.
